FIU Sierra Leone Delegation to Pay a Weeklong Mentoring Visit to Liberia – A Joint Communique to be Signed

A high-power delegation of the Financial Intelligence Unit of Sierra Leone and other competent authorities that are combating money laundering and countering terrorist financing (AML/CFT) in that country is expected to pay a weeklong working and mentoring visit to Liberia from October 10-17, 2021.

The Sierra Leonean AML/CFT delegation headed by its Director General, David N. Borbor is anticipated to brainstorm with their Liberian counterpart and other local stakeholders about the enhancement of Liberia’s effort in combating illicit financial flow and improvement in technical compliance; as the country prepares for the second round of Mutual Evaluation next year (2022) by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

It can be recalled that this mentoring visit comes after the Liberian FIU and other competent authorities visited neighboring Sierra Leone to get details of lesson learned from that Mano River Union country that underwent similar Mutual Evaluation by the FAFT Style regional body; GIABA.

The Sierra Leonean delegation has a scheduled meeting with the Liberian authorities to include the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the Central Bank of Liberia, the Liberia Revenue Authority, Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service, the Liberia National Drug Enforcement Agency and other institutions.
Meanwhile, a joint communique will be signed by the two Mano River Union countries that are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); as well as the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), a specialized regional group.
While the Sierra Leonean delegation will be in the country, they are scheduled to pay a courtesy call to the Sierra Leonean Embassy accredited near Monrovia.
